Stress, Anxiety and Panic Attacks
The habit of overbreathing causes the levels of Carbon Dioxide in our body to drop. CO2 plays a vital role in the body in the release of oxygen to our cells, the dilation of our blood vessels and the relaxing of smooth muscle. Breathing lightly through the nose, without taking big breaths and breathing too much, is the best way to maintain a healthy level of CO2 in our bodies.
When we are breathing correctly our circulation improves, vasodilation takes place and the 100,000 miles of smooth muscle in our body relaxes and functions correctly. When we are anxious or stressed the opposite happens in our bodies. Our blood vessels constrict, the circulation of blood to our extremeties is inhibited as blood rushes to the major muscle groups and the vital organs as part of the “ fight or flight” response of the body. The smooth muscle in our body tenses up also. We take big breaths in readiness fo a “fight or flight”.
The problem lies when this type of breathing becomes habitual. The bigger breaths we take the more we have to continue to take big breaths to feel like we are getting enough air.
The paradox is that people who overbreathe do not feel like they are getting enough air!
It is a physiological feedback loop that is malfunctioning. Many people are not aware of just how powerful a connection there is between how they breathe and their levels of stress, anxiety or frequency of panic attacks.
The Buteyko Breathing Method helps address your Stress, Anxiety or Panic Attacks:-
Explaining the physiological connection between our breathing habits and feelings of anxiety, stress or panic in our bodies.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea
Snoring is often joked about as if it is not something to be taken too seriously. The truth of the matter is that snoring, especially loud snoring, greatly reduces the quality of life of the snorer and anyone else close by yearning for a restful night’s sleep.
The greater the volume of air a person breathes day in day out the more likely that person is to snore. Sleep Apnea is a dangerous condition that is becoming more prevalent in our modern world. Over-breathing, especially through the mouth when asleep, greatly increases the likelihood of someone developing Sleep Apnea.
A person with this problem repeatedly holds his or her breath during sleep putting enormous pressure on the heart and the cardiovascular system of the body. Loud Snoring and Sleep Apnea often go hand in hand and are recognised by health professionals as having many detrimental affects to the human body such as a greater risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and obesity.
Also fatigue, raised cortisol levels and anxiety are more likely to occur when a person is not enjoying deep and restful sleep. Ask any person who is a habitual snorer or suffers from Sleep Apnea how they feel each morning and the answer is most likely to be summed up in one word -“exhausted”.
The Buteyko Breathing Method helps address your Snoring or Sleep Apnea:-
- Explaining the physiological causes of loud Snoring and Sleep Apnea and creating an awareness of how to reduce, manage or even eliminate Snoring and Sleep Apnoea.
- Teaching you how to breathe the correct volume of air for your body’s needs. This involves learning to calm and reduce breathing before sleep ensuring a restful night’s sleep.
- Teaching you breathing exercises that can be incorporated into your daily life to permanently address the causes of Snoring and Sleep Apnea.
- Empowering you to take control of your Snoring and Sleep Apnoea and help to transform your quality of life.
The Buteyko Breathing Method offers a natural, non-invasive approach to the management and elimination of Snoring and Sleep Apnea. The Buteyko Breathing Method helps you to take control of your breathing and enjoy a restful night’s sleep. How you breathe while you are asleep has an enormous impact on your health and well being during the day.
Many people switch to habitual mouth breathing in childhood. This can have serious detrimental effects on a child’s health and development.
Mouth breathing may seem like an innocuous habit but there is a wealth of research documenting the negative affects of children breathing through their mouths habitually.
Dr Christian Guilleminault is considered to be the father of sleep medicine. He is credited with the discovery of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Upper Airway Resistance (UARS) in the 1970’s. In Dr. Guilleminault’s opinion restoration of nasal breathing during wake and sleep may be the only valid “complete” correction of paediatric sleep-disordered breathing. According to his research, the removal of tonsils or adenoids alone is not sufficient to restore normal breathing during sleep. The negative habits of mouth breathing must also be addressed to help avoid sleep disordered breathing including sleep apnoea. It is of paramount importance that parents are made aware of this fact.
80% of the growth of a child’s face occurs in the first 5-6 years of life. If a child is habitually breathing through his or her mouth their face does not develop as it should. Mouth breathing causes high, narrow upper arches to develop in the child as a result of poor tongue posture. Also the mandible (lower jaw) does not grow forward to its full potential resulting in a longer face and receding chin. This can put the child at a higher risk of developing Obstrutive Sleep Apnea as airway space is restricted.
If a child is not sleeping properly it will have a direct impact on his or her development in many ways. Research now shows that a lack of deep restful sleep can affect a child’s growth as growth hormones are released during sleep and put the child at a greater risk of learning difficulties in school. There is also a growing body of research linking poor sleep patterns amongst children to ADD and hyperactivity.
Buteyko Breathing can readily counteract these childhood problems and children do not find it a difficult thing to incorporate into their lives. If you are a concerned parent and would like to discuss this further with me please do not hesitate to get in touch using the Contact Form.
